Debunking common tattoo myths: what you need to know…
Tattoos have been part of human culture for thousands of years, yet many myths and misconceptions still surround the art form. As a professional tattooer of 15 years, I'm here to clear up on some of the most common tattoo myths. Whether you're a seasoned “tat master“ or first timer, it's important to know the facts.
Tattoos are for young people…
One of the most pervasive myths is that tattoos are only for the young. In reality, people of all ages get tattoos. Many older individuals choose to get tattoos to commemorate significant life events, honor loved ones, or simply express their creativity. Age is just a number when it comes to body art. The oldest person I’ve ever tattooed was a very adventurous 80 year old lady. If she could do it so can you!
Tattoos are permanent and that means FOREEEEVVVVEEEERRRR…
While it's true that tattoos are meant to be permanent. Advancements in laser removal technology have made tattoo removal a viable option. Laser treatments can significantly fade or completely remove tattoos, though the process can be time-consuming and costly. However, it's always best to choose a tattoo that you love and can live with for a lifetime. This process also makes it much easier to cover or rework a less than stellar tattoo.
Tattoo ink is unsafe
Tattoo inks are regulated and made from safe, non-toxic materials. Reputable tattoo shops use high-quality inks and follow strict hygiene standards to ensure client safety. If you have concerns about allergic reactions, you can discuss that with your doctor before your session.
Tattoos hurt way too much… I’m a weenie
Pain tolerance varies from person to person, and while getting a tattoo can be uncomfortable, most people find the experience manageable. The level of pain depends on the location of the tattoo, the size and complexity of the design, and your personal pain threshold. Many describe the sensation as a tolerable cat scratching, bee sting or burning feeling.
Tattoos will look gross when you get older.
A well-done tattoo will age with you gracefully. While it's true that skin changes over time, proper aftercare and sun protection can help keep your tattoo looking good for years to come. If you're concerned about how a tattoo will age, choose areas with less skin movement and follow your artist's aftercare instructions diligently. Also as a traditional tattooer I put great care into composing designs with longevity as a primary concern.
You can’t donate blood if you have a tattoo…
This myth stems from outdated guidelines. In most places, you can donate blood as long as your tattoo was done at a licensed facility and you wait a certain period (usually around three months) after getting inked. Always check the current guidelines with your local blood donation center.
Tattoos are unprofessional…
Attitudes toward tattoos in the workplace have evolved significantly. Many industries are now more accepting of tattoos, especially when they are tasteful and can be easily covered if necessary. Professionalism is about performance and demeanor, not body art. If doctors, lawyers, judges, and CEOs can get tattooed so can you!
You can get a tattoo over a scar…
This just isn’t true. I’ve tattooed over plenty of heavily scarred individuals. Tattoos can often be used to cover or incorporate scars into a design. However, tattooing over scar tissue can be more challenging, and the process may require special techniques that make the design a bit more costly.
All tattoos fade quickly…
While all tattoos will fade to some degree over time, proper aftercare and sun protection can slow this process. Using high-quality ink and getting your tattoo done by an experienced and skilled artist will also help ensure your tattoo remains vibrant for years.
You can’t get a good job if you have a visible tattoo…
While some employers may have strict policies about visible tattoos, many others have relaxed their dress codes in recent years. Industries such as tech, creative, medical field even the armed forces are more accepting of tattoos. It’s always a good idea to research a company’s policy before a job interview if you have visible tattoos.
